Have you ever felt that quiet pull? The soft whisper that you are meant for something more? I remember exactly when I first heard mine.
Years ago, I walked away from my corporate marketing job and stepped into a Chicago Public Schools classroom to teach dance. It looked irrational from the outside. I took a pay cut, let go of a clear career path, and traded certainty for something I could not fully explain. But the moment I stepped into that space with students, I felt myself waking up.
As I taught, I began experimenting with using social dance to help students build social and emotional skills. No one told me to do it. It came from instinct and curiosity, and it felt like I had finally found a kind of truth in my work.
Then something completely unexpected happened. Someone invited me to apply for a grant that would bring this little idea into many schools at once. I could have talked myself out of it. I could have waited until I had a better plan or more confidence. Instead, I followed the pull and said yes.
That decision changed the entire trajectory of my life.
I went from serving one school at a time to leading a youth outreach program that reached 30 schools in the first year. The following year we reached 50. After that we served more than 100 schools every single year for more than a decade. All of it grew from one instinct, one experiment, and one brave moment when I walked through an open door.
That experience taught me a truth I carry into all my work with educators:
Purpose rarely introduces itself in advance.
It reveals itself when you are already moving.
Since then, I have built programs, launched tech ventures, led non-profits, and supported hundreds of educators. I see the same pattern every time. Fulfillment comes to those who take one meaningful step even when they are unsure. Clarity arrives through action, not before it.
