Since we just closed the final chapter on Stranger Things last month, the world has been buzzing about the legacy of the Hawkins crew. And while the series finale left us with plenty of closure, one concept has officially entered the “Personal Growth Hall of Fame”: The Vecna Song.
If you spent 2025 catching up on the final episodes, you know the stakes. For those who didn’t, a Vecna Song is your psychic lifeline. In the show, the villain Vecna traps you in a mental prison of your own shadows, trauma, and “stuckness.” The only thing that can break the spell? Your favorite song. It’s the music that resonates so deeply with your soul that it creates a portal back to reality.
For me, that song – the one that would snap me out of the Upside Down every single time – is “7” by Prince. I’ve loved the song for decades now, with one of my best memories I associate with it being the bowling league I joined with friends back in my twenties (I am TERRIBLE at bowling, but in this league, that was sort of the point).
For some reason, I begged the bowling alley DJ to play this song every week and hearing it takes me right back to those carefree and hilarious moments with my friends.
But this isn’t just about bowling memories or being a Prince fan. As the years have gone by, this song has continued to be my go-to when I need a jolt of empowerment, and it connects to the foundation of my coaching philosophy. Here is why “7” is the ultimate anthem for anyone looking to break free and find their flow.
Identifying the “Seven”
Prince sings: “All seven and we’ll watch them fall / They stand in the way of love.”
In the Upside Down of our daily lives, we are often haunted by “The Seven.” These are the internal blocks that paralyze us:
- Fear of the unknown.
- Ego protecting its image.
- Perfectionism that prevents starting.
- Comparison to others’ journeys.
- Stagnation in old habits.
- Limiting Beliefs about what we deserve.
- Distraction from our true purpose.
Just like the characters in Stranger Things, we often feel like an “army’s marching feet” are coming for us. But Prince reminds us that these obstacles are not as solid as they seem.
Intellect and Savoir-Faire (my favorite line)
How do we defeat the things that keep us stuck? Prince doesn’t suggest a sword or a shield. He suggests intellect and savoir-faire. In my coaching, this is where the Pivot happens. We don’t “hustle” our way out of burnout. We don’t “grind” through a creative block. That’s just more noise. Instead, we use savoir-faire: a graceful, intuitive knowingness.
When you align your skills with your passion, you enter a flow state. In this state, the obstacles don’t just move; they dissolve. You aren’t fighting the Seven; you are simply watching them fall because you’ve shifted to a frequency they cannot inhabit.
The New City (The Flow State)
The song ends with a vision of a “new city with streets of gold” where the “young, so educated, they never grow old.”
This is the ultimate goal of Pivot to Flow. When we break the “Vecna curse” of our own limiting mindsets, we reach a state of lasting impact as educators, and constraints like time and self-doubt lose their grip.
“And together we’ll love through all space and time.” That is the definition of Flow, a timeless, effortless space where you are “yours” and the work is “yours,” and the two become one.
What’s Your Vecna Song?
The series may be over, but the monsters we face, like procrastination, self-doubt, and the “animosity” of our internal critics, are very real.
If you feel like you’re being pulled into the Upside Down of your career or your life, it’s time to change the soundtrack. It’s time to find your key, embrace your savoir-faire, and watch the walls fall down.
